There’s a sweet spot when it comes to maternity and newborn photography—a perfect window where timing, preparation, and the right amount of planning come together to create images that feel calm, connected, and reflective of your maternity experience. Whether you’re counting down the weeks to meet your baby or already imagining those first quiet days at home, knowing when to schedule your session and how to prepare to make the most of your time with a photographer can make all the difference. After years of photographing maternity and newborn sessions, I’ve got a few sweet tips to make for smooth shoot days. Let me walk you through the ideal timing for your session, along with simple, thoughtful ways to get ready so your photos feel as natural and meaningful as the moment you’re in.
Capturing the perfect photos can often be a matter of timing. For pregnancy photos, I recommend booking for the 30 to 34 week range. This will make for the perfect baby bump size, without you being too tired or uncomfortable. At this stage, most clients still feel comfortable moving, sitting, and standing — which allows us to create a variety of gentle poses without feeling rushed or strained.
Booking within this window also offers a little breathing room in case baby decides to arrive earlier than expected.
For newborn shoots, booking your session at the 4 week mark allows some time for both parents and baby to rest and recover. Newborns tend to be more expressive at this time so we’ll be able to capture lots of bright facial expressions and precious moments. This is usually the point in time where any baby acne/skin irritations have settled down as well, which allows for some effortlessly sweet photos.
Please note: I don’t edit out birth marks, freckles or any baby scars unless requested.
Neutral, soft-toned clothing photographs beautifully and helps keep the focus of your photos on your connection as a family. Creams, beiges, soft greys, blush, and muted earth tones are always sweet choices. Flowing fabrics, knits, and natural textures add warmth to your images too, so something to consider when choosing your wardrobe.
For newborns, simple onesies, swaddles, or bare skin with a neutral wrap are timeless and allow your baby’s features to shine.
You don’t need to worry about having everything “perfect.” Babies will be babies and that’s exactly what makes your photos unique. As your maternity photographer, our session together will be designed to move at your baby’s pace, with lots of time for feeding, soothing, and snuggles. My goal is to create a calm environment that moves at your family’s rhythm.

While it’s a totally valid option to choose only one session, maternity OR newborn, I can’t emphasize enough how special it is to do both! Shooting both sessions with the same photographer allows you to take identical shots pre baby and post baby, perfectly capturing the excitement of your maternity experience and the beauty of how your life is changed when your baby arrives
Maternity photos and newborn photos are about preserving the quiet magic of a special time that passes way too quickly. With the right timing, gentle preparation, and a relaxed approach, your images will reflect not just what this moment looked like, but how it felt.
